Kinetic ‘stabiles’ are another way Pearl breathes life into her sculptures. Inspired by heroes such as Alexander Calder and Juan Miro, this body of work sets her ceramic microbial forms spinning, swinging and teetering in space. The ceramic microorganisms are delicately balanced on metal rods, speaking to the fragile equilibrium of our soil’s biome. The gently rotating works beguile and enliven our sense of these microscopic beings’ importance and vulnerability.
These kinetic pieces were shown for the first time in Alchemy, a group show – hosted by Thrown Contemporary in collaboration with Omved Gardens in Highgate May 2024.
