Edge: Where The Land Meets The Sea @ Hastings Contemporary 26th Sept – 3rd Jan 2027
Responding to the theme of Edge: Where The Land Meets the Sea, curated by The Land Gardeners Henrietta Courtauld and Briget Elworthy, at Hastings Contemporary, Intertidal makes visible some of the myriad soil microbes, phytoplankton and algae of our wetlands.
Soil protozoa and bacteria break down organic matter and cycle it into vital plant-available nutrients for regrowth. In our wetlands single-celled flagellates fix carbon along-side cyanobacteria producing vast quantities of oxygen. Recently discovered algae are capable of digesting polluting microplastics. All play a critical role.
Jo uses ceramics to celebrate these “mudflat heroes” and reveal their fascinating forms – appropriately, since clay is part of our intertidal soil.
